Farm Camp Minnesota has provided many students grades 5-12 the opportunity to experience and learn about careers in agriculture. As we increase agricultural literacy for students throughout Minnesota, Farm Camp is working hard to show the many roles in the agriculture industry. East Grand Forks Ag Career Day is an example of this mission coming to fruition.
Your Dollars Make This Possible!
On May 1, 2023, more than 150 ninth graders loaded up four buses from East Grand Forks to attend Ag Career Day. Thanks to the Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council’s generosity, these buses were provided to the school with no cost to them. These Transportation Grants help eliminate limitations that may have prevented schools from participating in a Farm Camp Minnesota experience, due to funding for transportation. In 2022-2023, we are proud to share that these grants resulted in no Farm Camps being canceled due to transportation issues. A solution to an otherwise significant barrier to in-person participation.
East Grand Forks Ag Career Day
Like any other Farm Camp Minnesota experience, the East Grand Forks Career Day began with an in-class lesson prior to the excursion. The second part of the Farm Camp experience consisted of four stops: A & L Potato Company, Northland Community and Technical College with the University of Minnesota Crookston, American Crystal Sugar Company and Thompson Brothers Farm. Each Farm Camp culminates with career exploration activities for students to complete.
Our donors help to make this experience possible. Students answer a series of questions before and after Farm Camp to help us gauge the overall impact. As a result of the East Grand Forks Ag Career Day, of the more than 150 students, 90.5% can now name five agricultural careers in the world other than farmers. In the presurvey, conducted prior to the Farm Camp experience only 43.1% of students were able to successfully answer that question. This resulted in a 47.4% increase!
