As Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation celebrates 40 years of agricultural literacy, fiscal year 2026 gives us an opportunity to pause each quarter, look back on another decade, and appreciate how far this work has come. This history spotlight is part of that reflection. By revisiting each chapter of our story, we can better understand the people, programs, and partnerships that shaped our mission and helped us grow.
This quarter, we are reflecting on the 2000s. It was a decade of growth, deeper educator support, and stronger statewide reach. 2000s Expanding Impact is a fitting way to describe these years because MAITC built on its early momentum and continued establishing itself as a trusted source for agricultural literacy across Minnesota. By 2005-2006, the program was celebrating 20 years of service and connecting with students and educators in more than 500 schools statewide.
Why We Are Sharing 2000s Expanding Impact
This series is about more than looking back. It is about honoring the steady progress that brought MAITC to its 40th year. Every decade tells part of the story. The 2000s show how meaningful growth can happen through consistency, trusted relationships, and a clear commitment to serving educators and students well.
When we share the 2000s expanding impact, we are recognizing the progress made during this period and the foundation it created for future work. This was a time when MAITC broadened its reach, strengthened classroom support, and carried agriculture into more schools and communities across the state.
2000s Expanding Impact Through Educator Support
A defining part of the 2000s expanding impact was MAITC’s investment in teacher training and educational resources. Education Specialist Susan Anderson helped strengthen agricultural literacy instruction by supporting both educators and future teachers across Minnesota. That work helped equip more classrooms with the tools and confidence needed to make agriculture part of everyday learning.
The Minnesota AgMag continued as the flagship publication during this decade, reaching students and teachers in more than 500 schools statewide. Project Food, Land and People workshops also expanded through six-hour sessions centered on the 55-lesson Resources for Learning handbook. These efforts provided practical, meaningful support for educators across Minnesota.
2000s Expanding Impact in Schools and Libraries
Another important part of the 2000s expanding impact was the expansion of grants and literacy resources. Agricultural Literacy Grants were awarded to 14 teachers and schools for innovative projects, Project Food, Land and People implementation, and traditional mini-grants. These opportunities helped local educators bring agricultural learning to life in ways that fit their students and communities.
The Agricultural Children’s Literature Book Bundle program also grew to more than 200 sponsored bundles in public and school libraries, with new reader guides added. This helped extend agricultural literacy beyond the classroom and into shared reading spaces where students and families could continue learning.
2000s Expanding Impact Helped Shape the Future
Looking back, the expanding impact of the 2000s reminds us that growth happens step by step. By the mid-2000s, MAITC was broadening its reach, deepening educator support, and carrying agriculture into more classrooms across Minnesota. As we continue celebrating 40 years of MAITC Foundation, this decade deserves recognition for the role it played in shaping the future. The progress made in the 2000s helped lay the groundwork for the stronger programs, broader reach, and lasting impact that continue to define MAITC today.
Join us in harnessing agricultural knowledge for a brighter tomorrow.
Together, let's cultivate an agriculturally literate society and empower future generations with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the vital role agriculture plays in our daily lives.
